Footlocker Art Prize 2011

Forbidden Fruit

80×60cm
acrylic on wood

My ambition with this piece was to look past the idea of the template and to use the space provided to create something different. What makes this competition so intriguing is the question that it poses: Can shoe art be art? Where and how does one draw the line between art and design? Is this a design competition or an art competition? In my mind these were the questions we were faced with.

My resolution was to strive to include both elements. Shoe culture is too deeply rooted in design for the shoe itself to be neglected, but simple coloring and patterning may not be strong enough to bridge the gap into the realm of art. I made it my goal to balance these elements in the production of my piece.

420 hours, 190 shoes, 60 boxes, about 25 books on tape, 3 pencils, one entry
