Okey Dokes. Painting again. January was fun filled month and Febtovember should prove equally as fun. The last couple weeks have been the first couple steps into my routine for the year. Paint…..all day. But! I’m lovin’ it and I’m super excited how things are moving forward so far. Just a few quick things before we cover that stuff. The last two weeks of January I was working on some t-shirt designs that are going to be released mid year in preparation for the tempest. They are yet to hit the internet, but I think they will be well liked. There will be two men’s designs and one exclusively women’s design. I have included some sneak peaks, but you’ll have to wait until mid year to see the actual shirts. I will have an on line store at that point where I will be selling shirts and prints as well as perhaps a few other small things like phone skins and whatnot. (those are still tentative.)
Anyways, end of January squeezed in a final commission. A back tattoo that I’m particularly stoked on. I think possibly the favourite of the few I have done so far (including my own.) All you pretty much need to know about it is… Year of the goat, music is king, Chinese is awesome. Got to have a lot of say in this one, although not really on the size. I’m not sure how big it will be, but regardless it will be sick. I’ll try and post some on skin picks when its done.
Now…..Painting. Here is the first timelapse of many that I will do this year. As well as a stitch photo (of which I won’t do as many.) But, it lets you kind of check in on the progress. Anyways, I started working in color as I was going but then just decided that doing all the underpainting and then going back to color made a lot more sense. so… here it is, a bunch of pics…
Actually its from 2011, but either way. Its 2012 now though. Anyways, back in Brisbane now after a long hiatus overseas full of many a good times with family and friends along with the occasional debaucherous night scattered in here and there. Since I’ve been back I’ve been juggeling with a list of things, some of which involve throwing together a magazine article for JamRock Magazine based out of NYC and finishing up with the UBC jerseys I started last November. I also spent a few hours last night lining and shading the annual tattoo design. I’ve already gotten it done this year but i didn’t get the chance to line and shade the actual sketch myself. Anyways, thought I’de breeze through and do that. You can check it out below. The composition is made up of all the tempest characters as well as a few hints here and there of other projects I worked on last year: Foot Locker, Munny doll etc. I left the original sketch and paper showing through on the bottom cause it kind of ads to the original feel and shows the process. Red sketch, Blue sketch…One Sketch, Two sketch…
In other news….the plan for 2012 is…. you guessed it….more “Tempest.” I have a shit load of painting to do this year. So, once I finish up my final projects and organizational stuff for the year I will be busting my ass for the next 11 months to finish it up. Let’s just say I’m not expecting a lot of outside time this year… I’m also choosing to be very picky with commissions this year. Not that I ABSOLUTELY WON’T take any, but they have to be beneficial to me in other ways besides just quick cash….That being said, if you have a project you want me in on, don’t hesitate to email me and I’de be more than happy to discuss it with you. But, I am looking forward to starting up painting again. Its been about a solid two and a half months since I’ve held a brush so it could take some getting used to. Anyways, should be good and I’ll try to start up regular posts and time-lapses once I start painting.
Here is a commission I did back in July or something, kind of intermixed with around the whole footlocker fiasco. It was an anniversary present, so I promised I wouldn’t put anything up on the site until it was gifted. Anyways, now that its christmas, and it has been girfted, what could be more fit… LETS GET TROPICAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO, havent posted for a while. BUT, doesn’t mean I havent been busy. The month of november was pretty much dedicated to some illustration jobs I had to finish up. Sadly, this meant that I didnt get much done on “The Tempest,” but!……. thats the breaks. On the plus side it gave me a lot of time working on my tablet. I feel like I finally have a grasp on these programs which I always just used a few aspects of. Granted, I still probably use only 3% of the programs capacity……But!…..i use that 3% pretty dang good. lol.
Anyways, there are three projects here. First, is a wine label for Philip Shaw Wines. Not only amazing, award winning wines, but also amazing people. I flew down to Orange, NSW for a quick inspirational trip. Saw some amazing plants and animals and met some amazing people. Each of the animals is one that I saw on my trip and each one also serves as a caricature of a person I met while down there. I also included a process shot that kind of breaks up the layers I work in and shows my digital method.
Next, is an Album cover for The Neu Music. Neu is an amazing musician, producer, and long time friend. We both kind of started doing our thing around the same time and have kind of progressed in parallel. Recently though he has far surpassed me and is truly creating awesome f@*$ ing music every day and finally getting recognized for it. Another group he is a part of called Head of the Herd is popping off as well and has been touring a lot lately. They will be playing the Commodore in Vancouver December 20th, opening up for The Sheepdogs. Anyways, His album drops December 21st and will be downloadable from his website www.TheNeuMusic.com .
And finally, I’m designing the jerseys for my old team back in Vancouver. This sample I have here will be a full chest design printed in full color sublimation. In my honest opinion……. these will be so sick. lol. Not because of my design but the company that will be printing them, Five Ultimate, consistently does an awesome job and these jerseys are guaranteed to blow your mind! I may be doing an order of them for the general public sometime in Febtober or something. Just keep your eyes peeled on my facebook page, Kalin Thompson’s Art. Or feel free to email me if your interested, kalinthompson@gmail.com.
These are the last commissions I will be taking for a while. I apologize for this, but I need the time to work on my own projects. The tempest will need about 1000 hours or more till i can finish it and, time doesn’t grow on trees, lol, so I gotta get my grind on for a bit. If you are interested in commissioning me, shoot me an email and I will put you in the Que for when I finish.
Enjoy the pics!
(Sorry, no timelapse. More will come in the new year)
Last night= Huge success. Thanks everyone who came out, thanks to RedBull and thanks to Laced for putting on an awesome event. All the artists who participated killed it. There were some awesome designs there! And some awesome dolls being done on site. Props to everyone for workin’ it like bouses. I got lots of positive feedback and support from everyone! which is always sweet.
On a separate note! Not ONE BUT TWO people asked me if it was “decoupage.” First off….I don’t know what that is….so….no, lol. Secondly! I looked it up and its some kind of elaborate collage. Which I guess makes it kind of a compliment? Maybe, they thought I took pictures from a “real artist” and pasted em on the doll, or maybe even PHOTOS!!! So, yeah, the ultimate compliment. lol. Also, If you got a poster you lucked out, cause at the end of the night when I went to go grab a few for my personal collection, there were none of the full frontals left. Which makes sense. Who doesn’t want a full frontal? That being said… Here are some shots of my piece (………you wish….. Get your mind out the gutter.)
“Quartermaine,” Acrylic on 18″ Munny………. By: Yours Truly. Around 250 hours

So this week, although I wasn’t gunna post one, I had filmed one anyways just for shits. I’m trying not to give too much away about the finished product so that’s why I haven’t included any pics, but after the 27th I’ll have loads of pictures and hopefully the videos will make a little bit more sense. This was a 5 hour session, but I had to speed it up cause the video was WAY too long and boring and in retrospect i could have sped it up more even. Anyways, you don’t have to sit through the whole thing, but I think because this song is the hotness your gunna want to. Chiddy Bang featuring Mac Miller – “Heatwave” off the FREE mixtape “Peanut Butter and Swelly“ (I couldn’t decide what format you put album titles in, so instead of looking it up i used ALL formats!!). You can download the mixtape here.
All that being said if your in Brisbane on thursday the 287th please come and check out the show; Mo’ Munny Mo’ Problems 7-10pm, Bakery Lane, Ann Street Fortitude Valley 4006. You can check the deets on the facebook page……AND ON THIS POSTER!!!!!
Ok so this week I finally got my shit together and got the timelapse all done early in the week, set up my new comp, so I’m ready to handle it. Anyways, “Rick” is coming along swell, just finishing up all the animalia today and I’ll hopefully be able to finish up everything in time for the show although i haven’t really started the hard part yet, so we’ll see. This next bit is where the time really just disappears. I may not post any pictures next week just to keep the whole thing a little bit of a secret before the show. But anyways, enjoy. (I apologize, the pictures do a weird thing over the video, but still should be ok. )
(you’ll notice in the video I’m actually applying a colour layer to the under painting that i already finished. This is a more classical approach that I’m integrating into my process. So far I love the results and I’m excited to see what it offers in future paintings. Let me know what you think. Enjoy)
This week has been hectic as ever. But i got some painting in and made fair progress on the “Rick” (the munny doll) so far. I gots big plans for this bad boy and at this point i’m able to sess it out a little and approximate a finishing time of probably two more weeks. Anyways, hopefully in the end it will all be worth it. No tempest work this week, but i was juggeling a second order of Hong Kong jerseys and that ended up taking quite a bit of my time. Pretty much wrapped up with that though. And pretty happy with all the orders, they are looking so sick. When i get some free time i have some more ideas for other jerseys that i think could come out pretty cool. But thats then. ALSO, no video this week. I have one filmed but my computer is getting bogged down cause i’m running a lot of large files these days and i had to scrsp it cause it was taking too long. So, next week i will def have one. Anyways, i appologize…Enjoy the pics!
As I finally get settled into the tempest: nice long weeks, timelapses, all that fun stuff. I decided, as usual, to take on another project. Sweet. If you’ve heard of Munny dolls, you’ll get it if not…you probably won’t. But basically there will be a Munny exhibition here in Brisbane in late october called “Mo Munny, Mo Problems.” and I’ve been asked to participate. I was given the option of the 7″ or 18″ doll to paint. And, like an idiot, I chose the F%#^$ing 18 inch doll, cause, well, you know…..value. Lol. If i’m not paying for it may as well go for more. Well, that came back and bit me in the ass, cause the thing is HUGE. Its about the size of a three year old with a giant, shiny, white, cabeza. So, now a project that I was gunna put three days into, looks like it may take closer to a week or two, maybe more. All that complaining aside, I have what I think is a pretty sick idea, so hopefully, now I just have to execute.
So, next week I’ll try to post some Munny painting timelapse… and if I’m really diligent, I’ll get some more tempest work done too. but yeah, we’ll see when we get there. I’m not so hot at juggling projects.
Ok. Now that I’m finally working on The Tempest full time it would be really easy to just “check out.” BUT, I realize that people DO actually care a little bit what I’m working on. So, to stay updated I’m gunna try and post timelapses once a week exhibiting parts of the painting I think to be interesring with music that I like. So, without drawing it out too much here is the first of many. This is a five hour session.
Oh and ps. I’m gunna start listening to some rosetta stone. Because I have countless hours of my life to sit and listen I may as well be learning new languages while I do it.
